3 Signs You Need Roof Repair
Here in Southwestern Michigan, it’s easy to miss the signs that you may need roof repair. Unlike Southern states, our homes receive the full brunt of every season; we get blistering hot summers and chilling cold winters. As a result, there are more ways that your roof could be damaged here than in almost any other climate. Throughout the Midwest, roofs like yours face challenges such as:
- Heavy snowfall
- High windspeeds
- Heavy rain
- Exceptionally hot and cold weather
- Unique bugs and other pests
With these challenges in mind, it makes sense why so many homeowners can’t always tell if they need roof repair; there are just too many possibilities to watch out for.
Here at Blue Line Remodeling, we believe that every homeowner should know when their roof is at risk. So, we’re taking this month’s blog post to discuss 3 signs you should look for when inspecting your roof.
1. Curled Shingles
Curled shingles are one of the easiest ways to tell you may need roof repair. As time passes, the asphalt in your shingles dehydrates, causing them to shrink. As a result, the shingle curls upward and becomes fragile enough to blow away in strong wind. Other signs your shingles are compromised include:
- Moss on, around, or underneath your shingles
- Shingles on the ground or littered around your property
- Dark patches on your shingles (indicating missing granules)
- Patches of shingles gone or missing from your roof
If you notice any of these signs, you may need roof repair ASAP to prevent any further (and much more expensive) damage.
2. Abnormally High Energy Bills
A more subtle sign that you may need roof repair is if you find yourself paying abnormally high energy bills. If your roof is compromised, then it could be leaking the air inside your home, making your furnace or AC unit work harder to keep your home’s temperature normal. If you’ve noticed your furnace or AC kicking on more than usual lately, we recommend inspecting it for any signs of aging or other damage. However, if your HVAC units are working properly you likely have an air leak somewhere in your home.
3. Outside Weather Becoming Inside Weather
As a rule of thumb, your home should never have indoor water drips just because it’s raining outdoors. On a similar note, you should rarely (if ever) feel drafts inside of your home with all the windows closed. If you experience either of these phenomena, it could mean that you have openings in your roof.
While a little bit of rain water may not seem like a big deal at first, keep in mind that you’re likely experiencing only one symptom of a broader issue. Your home could also be suffering rain, snow, or sun damage in areas that you rarely check or can’t access (such as inside the walls).
